Backup & Disaster Recovery: frequently asked questions

Doesn't Microsoft already back up my Microsoft 365 data?

Not the way most people assume. Microsoft protects its infrastructure, but deleted emails and files fall outside retention windows, and Microsoft's own service agreement recommends third-party backup. Independent Veeam backups mean you can recover any item, from any point in time, for as long as you choose.

What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?

Keep at least 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy offsite. We extend this to 3-2-1-1-0: one copy immutable (unchangeable by ransomware) and zero errors, verified through automated restore testing.

How fast can we recover after a ransomware attack?

With instant VM recovery and immutable backups, critical systems can often be running again in hours rather than weeks. Your exact recovery time objective is defined in your DR plan — and we rehearse it, so there are no surprises.

Where is our backup data stored?

Encrypted copies are stored in Canadian data centres to keep your data within Canada, which matters for privacy obligations under PIPEDA and BC's PIPA.
